Yankee-Hating Retard of the day: Muhammad Cohen

Who?

Some guy from the United Kingdom.

They play baseball in the UK?

I wouldnt know, though at last check, I have about a dozen hits from across the pond, so maybe one of you guys can fill me in.
Then again, if the WBC is any guide, then (American) baseball isnt played in Europe.

Anyway, what has this scumbag done to deserve my brown-tinted spotlight? Well…

Hating the Yankees is about as American as rainouts, war protests and redneck weddings, and it takes place an aweful lot.
The most celebrated form of Yankee-Hating is was taking shots at the owner, George Steinbrenner and everything he represented (as in: cash, money, green, dead presidents, currency)…though for the time being, its taboo to do so, on account of George having died. Even Boston fans are easing up on the hate, out or respect, for the greatest owner in baseball sports history.

Enter Mr Cohen…

Heres a f*cking love letter if Ive ever read one: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cifamerica/2010/jul/15/george-steinbrenner-loser-baseball

Granted, Steinbrenner had his low points (all of the 1980s come to mind) but Cohen paints the man as having no redeeming qualities whatsoever, when that couldnt be any farther from the truth.

“Steinbrenner was a laughable figure in the comedy series Seinfeld with nothing funny about him. He was a generous man whose many donations we never heard about – as anyone who follows baseball has heard about constantly for the past 35 years – who was breathtakingly cruel and petty.”

So, its not a good deed unless you tell the world in explicit detail about it? pass.
GOOGLE THAT SH!T if you really want to know.

Of coarse Cohen makes it a point to bring up every anti-Steinbrenners favorite point: Steinbrenners 2nd suspension from baseball paved the way for the modern dynasty.
…not entirely true. Yeah, the suspension allowed the Yankees to promote from within, which helped them win in 1996. But 1997 proved that it wouldnt be enough to create a dynasty. The offseason following the Yankees’ ALDS elimination was classic Steinbrenner dealings. Fill in the holes in the lineup with the best talent available on the market. From that, the 125 win 1998 season was possible.
The recent dynasty was set up by George’s suspension, but it wouldnt have survived without him.

I really dont get it. Every other sport its ok to do whatever it takes to win. F*ck, in Europe, cities riot whenever a soccer game doesnt end well. And dont feed me this “its 162 games/marathon” bullsh!t either. That doesnt change anything. Last I checked, wanting to win every game is a good thing when competing against other teams. Baseball is a marathon, but so is every other sports season.

Another thing I dont get, spending money on your team is bad? Only in baseball?
The NBAs Boston Celtics last championship was more or less bought and paid for with their free agant signings. Hell, Cleveland is burning down as I type because LeBron James is going to Miami, who (like the Celtics and Yankees) have swallowed up the best players for their team.
The Miami Heat, Boston Celtics and the New York Yankees.
All 3 aquired and paid for the best talent and are under pressure to win because of it…but only the Yankees are criticized because of it.
The Yankees are criticized for their expensive new stadium…while the NFLs Dallas Cowboys and their Steinbrenner type owner built a new stadium more expensive then the combined payroll of the NFC North Division, but nobody criticizes them.

lets see…

what else can I disprove from this idiot…ah, here we go…

” In his last gasp of conceit before formally ceding control of the team to his son Hank, Steinbrenner orchestrated the dismissal of manager Joe Torre, who’d led the Yankees to the postseason for 12 consecutive years.”

This one is easy…Torre left us, not the other way around. We offered him a deal that still wouldve made him among the highest paid managers, if not THE highest paid manager, and he said no, then left.
Torre left because he was sick of the pressure to win. Sure he led to 4 championships, but that was almost a decade ago at the time and what Yankee wouldnt be impatient at that point. The Yankees offered him a deal that would pay additional money for every playoff win…and Torre said “no thanks” then left the Yankees.

Dont say George ran Torre out of town because at a certain point, you need to understand how it works in NY. Dont say you understand how things work with Steinbrenner then cry when he insults you. Torre served the Yankees well, then simply got tired of winning and went to manage the Dodgers.

Anyone who knew anything about Steinbrenner knew he had his redeeming qualities that made him tolerable. To not understand that makes me question what credentials you have to even write about the man…then again, what credentials does a guy who writes for UK based news have to write about an American sport icon in the 1st place?

…BTW, like the last time, feel free to comment to this t w at-waffle over why hes wrong. Im sure he’d love to hear from you.

……BTW again, I feel the best overall response would be to wait for an iconic European sports figure to die, then write an article about how sh!tty a person they were…but that would require me to actually give a sh!t about European sports…

………BTW again again, I just love how this guy cant even show his face for his own acticle. Also how, according to his profile, “Muhammad Cohen, a native New Yorker in exile” I wonder if thats because he once worked for the Yankees but got fired by George.
Hell, that explains Tim McCarvers hatered…

Return of the Sting

While the Yankees settle in to play their required subway series set against the Mets, the former NY franchise known as the Dodgers are paying Boston a visit, marking the first time Joe Torre has to face them in a long while, but more importantly, the first time Manny Ramirez has to play there since being traded.

Lets recap that, shall we?

At the deadline 2008, Manny Ramirez was bannished from Boston in a 3 team deal that also involved the Pirates. Ramirez got the hell out of Boston and Boston got rid of Ramirez. Everybodys happy!
Pitt got prospects, Boston got Jason Bay and the Dodgers now got to tout around the most feared righty in the NL. Again, everybody wins (except Pittsburgh, who never win)

As time passed, it turned out the only long term winner here was Manny. Not LA, not Bay, not Boston, not Pitt and certainly not those guys who were sent to Pitt. Just Manny. All 3 teams are still ringless and pennentless, while Bay had to play in Boston for a year and a half before sprinting out the door to the Mets (gotta be desperate to jump on that trainwreck in advance). But Ramirez? Getting out of Boston was the ultimate goal.
Sure, he also wouldve liked to win a title in NY and rub it in Bostons face, but we’d be nit-picking then…Manny wanted out. Mission Accomplished.

Anyway, after the trade, Boston fell short in the playoffs while Manny single handedly put LA in the NLCS when they werent even suppose to show up to October.

Now Manny returns to Fenway. What kind of reception will he recieve?
Will it be the Johnny Damon reception of Boos?
Will it be the cheers? Though, come to think of it, when has an ex-Red Sox player ever been cheered for with a Ramirez type reputation?
Seriously, remember the game in 2008 vs NY, when he decided he wasnt gonna play? Yankees won 1-0. How big of a difference could he have made in that? 2008 ALCS? Boston lost in 7. How big of a difference could he have made there?
Ramirez single handedly saved LAs 2008 while effectively killing Bostons.
And since Boston is populated by classless fans, I dont expect many cheers.
Though more boos will probably be directed towards Torre if he steps out to make a pitching change.

2010

Everyone have a good christmas? Kwanza? New Years? Alrighty then…

Yankees at Fenway to begin, and end the season?
Phillies and their new ace go to Toronto?
Manny returning to Boston?
Yankees at Dodgers?
This season will have no shortage of great games to watch.

…but since at the end of the day all I care about it what the Yanks are doing, lets take a closer look at what the future holds…and some lingering questions…

Yankees vs Red Sox: opening day/end of the season.
We got spanked by the BoSox early last year right before we turned around and gave it right back to them just as hard, and took the division right in front of them…
It seems the most likely scenerio will be CC vs Beckett, then AJ vs Lackey, then Pettitte vs whatever overrated bum they have next. Either team could win any of those games and Id be an idiot to guess who would before pitchers/catchers have even reported, but there will be no sweeps…unlike last year where almost every set was a sweep.

Yankees at Dodgers
This was the dream world series matchup last postseason, even more so than the Angels vs Dodgers possibility.
Joe Torre vs Joe Girardi, Matt Kemp vs Curtis Granderson, Mark Texeira vs Andre Ethier, Derek Jeter vs Manny Ramirez, C.C. Sabathis vs…uh…can any Dodger compete with any Yankee pitcher?
Point is, this would be a great matchup of managers…not so much teams. Dodgers didnt do much this offseason, and if I didnt think they stood a chance against the Yankees then, then they definatly dont stand a chance against the Yankees now…

Left Field?
Damons still up in the air, and right before he signed with the Cubs, I was telling my dad about how good Marlon Byrn might be for us. The list of available fixes is growing short…
Heres a short list of people I nominate(d) to play left for NY in 2010, in order of ranking…

Damon
Holliday
DeRosa
Byrd
Dye
Bay
Cabrera
Gardner
Guererro
Hoffman

#5 Starter?
CC-AJ-Pettitte-Vazquez-???
It seems to be between Joba and Hughes…but never count out Gaudin or even Mitre.

…any hey, with C.M.Wang gone, the Yankees have a vancancy at the position of “Once a great pitcher but got hurt too much” that Ben Sheets could fill.

Awards 2009

The Yankees may have the biggest award of the year already on their mantle, but that doesnt mean we cant add a few more, and thanks to Jeter and Tex, we’ve already added 3 gold gloves and 2 silver sluggers! (Seriously though, can everyone please stop harping on how “Jeters getting too old”? The man is the best shortstop in baseball…again)

What else could we possibly add to our 2009 award case?

Cy Young?
…No. Grienke had one hell of a season (and just imagine how good he wouldve been if he werent a Royal). CC may have had an outstanding year, and was ALCS MVP, but Greinke was the best pitcher in baseball. Period.

Manager of the Year?
I’m not sure why everyone suddenly jumps to Mike Scioscia for this award. Sure, he led a team to overcome the death of a rookie and went to the ALCS, but Girardi deserves it even more.
I’ll give Scioscia his deserved props though. Overcomming the death of a teammate isnt ever easy. Nick Adenhart may not have been Thurman Munson-like on that team, but he was still a part of that Angel-family vibe. Plus, this year was the first in a long time that the AL west wasnt pitifully easy to win. The Rangers showed up this time and the Angels were plagued with injuries.
Still…The Yankees utterly failed in 2008 when they didnt even reach October. Girardi thus fell deeper into the shadow of Torre and anything short of a championship in 2009 would mean a pink slip for Girardi. So for him to help pull this team up to #27 was amazing. Plus, he promoted something on this team long since though imnpossible for a New York team: chemistry. Joe Girardi deserves to be MotY…and maybe, unlike as a Marlin, this time he can win the award and NOT lose his job…

MVP?
If I were Derek Jeter, I would loathe the Twins. Then again, they are our personal punching bags every October…but Jeter was suppose to win MVP once before, but got snaked by anti-Yankee voters who instead gave it to some nameless Twin named Morneau, who wasnt even around this October…now this year, Jeter is threatened to get snaked out AGAIN, though by a not-so-nameless Twin.
Both Jeter and Mauer have silver sluggers to their names this year as well as gold gloves, so this one is closer than sportscenter would have you believe. Mauer has had a great year, not just by catcher standerds, while Jeter always has a great year, by New York standerds (which are pretty damn high)
What sets Jeter apart is his intangibles, he always gets a hit when the Yankees need it most, which is a big reason why the Yankees won over 100 games this year and DIDNT need an extra game this regular season. What hurts Jeters cause is that he plays for the Yankees, the most hated franchise in sports.
BTW: Jeter won the Hank Aaron award this year as well (top offensive player)…so, yeah…

Yeah, congrats to Mariano Rivera too, for winning yet another Delivery Man of the Year award…

Im gonna make predictions now…

Rookie of the Year
AL: Elvis Andrus
NL: Tommy Hanson

Manager of the Year
AL: Joe Girardi
NL: Jim Tracy

Cy Young
AL: Zack Grienke
NL: Adam Wainwright

MVP
AL: Derek Jeter
NL: Albert Pujols

Overrated Joe Torre is overrated?

Yeah, not much to talk about in the world of the Yankees right now. We lost yesterday, but Sabathia is pitching today, so we’ll go back to winning….
I wanna talk about something else today…

Interesting talk has surfaced about Joe Torre…or at least the whispers are being heard.

Joe Torre was a man who was clueless before the Yankees, then left as some sort of genius, the world blissfully ignoring his pre-Yankee career as a manager. New York headlines paniced when he became Yankee manager, then they paniced when he decided to leave, for entirely different reasons.

Now with the Dodgers on the brink of another NLCS failure, one can not help but look at Torre’s postseason history. His lone postseason appearance before 1996 ended in a sweep. Then he won 4 world championships in 5 years with NY…and then started the 9 year run of failure for Joe, 9 years all in the postseason (7 in New York, 2 in LA). 4 ALDS eliminations, 2 (soon to be 3) Championship series eliminations, and 2 more world series failures. Most of those were with the Yankees but now hes gonna end up 0-2 as a Dodger, 0-everything as a non-Yankee.

To be fair, who wouldve thought Mo Rivera would faulter in 2001, or 2004? So you can throw those 2 up to fate. And Joe always had his high points. His team first-ego meshing managing style is what made the 96 champions so great and he helped mold and ready the 98 Yankees to their record 125 wins.
Also to be fair though, was he was in control of the Yankees, where winning isnt that hard, where theres no such thing as rebuilding, just reloading. He enjoyed the easiest 9th inning option in history: Go to Mo. And hes had the captain, Jeter, to help him as an on field leader.

Take the Yankees away? Its only been 2 years but the results have been speaking. Like the Yankees, hes been given a team fully capable of winning. When Ramirez, their best player, was suspended, the team still did great. They ran away with the NL west until the final weeks. Theyve enjoyed home field advantage in the 1st 2 rounds. This was a team built to win. So why are they rolling over so easily? I dont follow the NL as well, so I’m asking any Dodger fans to answer me on this.

The 09 Dodgers arent dead yet, but the eulogies are being written, and Joe Torre is in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. Hes been at the helm of a team thats managed only 2 wins in 2 years against the Phillies in the postseason. And game 2 this year was a game they couldve easily lost.

Last year Torre’s problem was poor bullpen managment. Whats this years excuse?

Playoff histories [Updated]

[Obviously, with the final playoff spot figured out, some changes are in order]

I’m sleep deprived and I’ve been looking at numbers for too long…bare with me…

This is actually a boring year for the playoffs. Same old same old it seems. Yankees? check. Red Sox? check. Angels? check. Cardinals? check. Phillies? check. Even the Rockies last minute surge isn’t new, they did the same 2 years ago. Given the fact that all 8 9 teams have postseason history, I figure its worth a look into some of those histories.

How far back should we be allowed to go? I figure 10 is about as far as we can get for “recent memory” From 1999 to 2008.

In the decade timespan, the big dogs have put up some impressive resumes, while others seem to have a history of trying to keep up:

1999-2008 postseason records
NYY: 52-38…4 AL pennents…2 world series wins
BOS: 38-26…2 AL pennents…2 world series wins
StL: 33-28…2 NL pennents…1 world series win
PHI: 11-6…1 NL pennent…1 world series win
LAA: 15-20…1 AL pennent…1 world series win
COL: 7-4…1 NL pennent
DET: 8-5…1 AL pennent
LAD: 5-10
MIN: 6-15.

Its no suprise that 7 of the last 10 world series winners are represented in this years playoffs. The top 5 on that list have made it a common thing for them to make October plans. And everyone have gone as far as the AL and NLCS before recently. All 8 teams have tasted postseason success.

This is how theyve all done against only each other in October though…

BOS: 28-12
NYY: 21-19 20-16
LAA: 11-13
PHI: 4-4
DET: 4-5
COL: 3-4
StL: 7-6 3-5
LAD: 2-7
MIN: 3-10

So….if history is a guide, it means the Yankees and Red Sox are destined to fight over the AL again while the NL is completely up in the air…lets break it down a little more. Each round 1 history.

NYY vs MIN
The Yankees have owned the Twins in 2 ALDS meetings, going 6-2, and both of those losses were at the hands of Johan Santana. So a Santanaless Twins team is winless against the Yankees.
The Tigers meanwhile found success against the Yankees in their lone 2006 meeting, Detroit winning it 3-1. One series is tough to go on, especially since both teams have changed a lot since 06.
The Yankees have beaten both teams [the Twins] very easily this season so its a toss up over which team is an ideal matchup. But if it came down to postseason history, the Twins seem like an easy win, and possible sweep.
I’d take the Yankees in 3 over the Twins…Yankees in 4 over the Tigers. Neither one is [The Twins aren’t] ready for the Yankees [especially after that 12 inning marathon against Detroit].

…and if you put a gun to my head and asked me “Twins or Tigers?” I’d pick the Twins to win tonight [Ok, so I’m 1 for 8 so far in my playoff bracket]

LAA vs BOS
Its almost disgusting how easily the Red Sox have blown away the Angels over the years. The Angels have been to October 5 times over the last 10 years, advancing to the ALCS only twice. Its no cooincidence either that all three times theyve lost in the ALDS, it was against Boston. The Red Sox have won 9 out of 10 October games against the Angels.
LA is a good playoff team, going 14-11 against teams not from Boston. Boston has just always found a way to dominate, even when Mark Texeria was an Angel.
Boston is struggling though this year, and the Angels have homefield and are favorites, but will it be enough to finally overcome the Red Sox?
No. Red Sox in 5.
HA! Just kidding. Angels in 5.

PHI vs COL
These two met in 2007 and the Rockies breezed through them 3-0 on the way to the world series. The Rockies are riding very similar momentum this year, but the Phillies are defending champions. In 07 they were lucky just to be in October thanks to a certain choke in the NL east. This time its very different. They’re not “lucky”, they’re defending world series champs. This matchup will be very different, and so will the result.
Phillies in 4.

LAD vs StL
The only recent history between these two is the 2004 NLDS. St Louis won 3-1 en route to the world series. The Dodgers were without Manny, Torre or most of their current cast of characters…and the Cardinals still had Pujols.
The Manny vs Pujols matchup should be interesting, but it’ll come down to pitching. St Louis has 2 cy young hopefulls…LA was lucky to fight off the Rockies last minute.
Dodgers offense vs Cardinals pitching should be fun and evenly matched…but the Dodgers dont have much pitching to counter the Cardinals offense.
Cardinals in 4.

And thus, those are my fearless 2009 playoff predictions. I wont get into AL/NLCS matchups until theyre official, but just to put it out there: I’ve got the Yankees over Cardinals at the end.

…though I havent been a perfect 7 for 7 on my playoff brackets since 2000 (they laughed at me when I picked the Mets to win the NL. Whos laughing now, HUH?)

Hey, its October baseball…

Technically…its October 1, so all 30 teams get to say they played in October…

Im not at the talking to dolls stage, but last night was a little hard to swallow for 2 reasons.
1-Joba struggled against the Royals of all teams. Trusting him with the ball in the playoffs is getting harder and harder when hes like this. Beat up the Red Sox but struggle vs KC? Which Joba will show up for us against LA in the ALSC? Better yet, which Joba will come out of the bullpen against Detroit?
2-More importantly, the regulars didnt get the job done. I’m focusing mainly on what Swisher did, allowing that RBI triple that made the difference in the game. In October, little things like that could decide the entire ballgame, like it did last night.
Getting this worried over 1 game is inane though. Still, maybe Girardi can take last night and use it as the launching point for a speech, like Torre did in 98 to kick start the team right before the playoffs.

4 teams fight over 2 playoff spots. It could all end today though. I could get into how and who and whatever, but thats already been done for me…

Lets talk about tonight instead. Yankees are off and our round 1 canon fodder is deciding itself in the meantime. I’ll probably use tonight, my last free night before playoff baseball (Packers face Vikings on MNF, cant miss that), to catch up on some neglected video games (I finally got my hands on Bioshock and the Orange Box). I couldnt really care less about the Twins/Tigers game since both would become roadkill (Im running out of metaphors) against the Yankees…and the Braves were exciting for a while, but once everyone started paying attention, they fell over so thats not interesting anymore either….and the Dodgers are doing their best Red Sox impression and limping into the playoffs (they havent been good since Manny got back from maternity leave)

…I’m also still waiting back on the status of those hypothetical playoff tickets. My friends cutting it a little close right now…

Lets beat some dead horses!

The Yankees still have everything locked away for October…check
Tiger and Twins still fighting over who wants to get bulldozed by the Yankees in a week…check
Braves still making a late dash for a playoff ticket…check
Phillies and Dodgers quietly preping division win parties…check
Red Sox still putting Craigs List ads out, looking for a virgin sacrifice so they can get back to winning…check.

We all set? Ok, onto tonights game vs KC…

End of 1 in New York
Joba did his usual 1st inning routine of giving up a run, but Jeters got his back, hitting home run #18…2 more and the Yankees will have the record for the most 20 home run people in a single season…would be a close one, 3 home runs in a week would be Jeter’s idea of a tear…

End of 1 in Detroit
With this exception, all the real interesting games happen later tonight.
Twins take an early lead…and they’ll need both those runs and more if they wanna back Carl Pavano and his 4.86 era…Yankee fans might recall him from our DL between 2005 and 2008…

Middle of 2 in New York
If this game mattered, Joba would be giving me heart problems right now. Bases loaded, 1 out and he works through.
…Nice little Jim Kaat piece on Joba http://kaatskorner.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/09/are_joba_rules_helping_or_hurt.html

Bottom 2 in Detroit
…and that 4.86 era just got bigger. Tigers put a 4 spot up. They can put themselves in a very nice position to win the division with a win tonight…Carl Pavano can find himself checking the help wanted section (again) if he doesnt get out of this inning…

Bottom 4 in New York
So Joba tops 90 pitches and can’t escape the 4th, with 3 runs to his name. Gaudin’s playoff rotation chances just doubled, and the question of should we even trust a 1 run lead to Joba in the bullpen becomes more prevailant…
…and Detroit looks more and more like the AL central winners…which kinda sucks, cuz the Yankees would be guarenteed to sweep the Twins in round 1, where as they’ll only most likely sweep, if not take it in 4 against the Tigers…oh well…

Bottom 5 in Detroit
Carlos Guillen just launched a bases clearing double, Tigers now have 7 unanswered runs and Carl Pavano’s night is over. Barring a big Twins rally, Detroit can call this one right now and have a chance to finish off Minnesota tomorrow night.
If that is the case, all 3 AL division winners can say they clinched their division, at home and against the 2nd place team…
…and Boston can say they limped in thanks to their 2nd place team losing…but I guess it doesnt matter how you got there, right?

…another thing thats been bothering me: Does anyone actually buy those “we won the wild card” shirts and hats that mlb.com is selling? What pride is there in saying “Hey, we didnt win our division but we still sneaked our way into October. Thats gotta count for something, right? Right?”

Bottom 5 in New York
Its good to know Nick Swisher got over his fear of hitting homers at home…

Middle of 7 in Cincinnati
Reds have won 7 of their last 8 and are beating the Cardinals right now. I just love how they always wait until their season is meaningless to get hot…makes me wanna cry sometimes…lucky for me, I’ve never been alive to witness both the Yankees AND Reds sucking. Reds were good in the late 80s and just as they were starting to suck, the Yankees began their dynasty.
Next year Cincy, next year…

Bottom 9 in Boston
Somebody call the police and arrest the Blue Jays because I believe theres a rape going on in Fenway. Wakefield gave up 5 runs in 3 innings….and it didnt help that Roy Halladay pitched a shutout. I’m more concerned that Boston gave up 12 runs. A playoff team should not be getting killed like that.

Bottom 8 in Philadelphia
Phillies gettin geared to clinch their division. Their lead over the Astros is so big, even Brad Lidge can’t possibly blow it.
Braves meanwhile, trail the Marlins, so its wild card or bust for them…not looking good.
Props go to Ricky Nolasco for striking out an insane 9 Braves in a row, 16 overall. As crappy as his season began, to come back and be this good is just amazing.

Game over in Detroit
Tigers magic number: 2
Twins need to never lose again this year…especially tomorrow, where the Tigers will try to clinch it against them.

Game over in Philadelphia
And the Phillies are officially in October to defend their title…yeah, I’m not really suprised either…3rd strait division title (1st one that didnt require the Mets to choke)

Bottom 9 in New York
We’ve mustered 4 hits tonight…2 of them by Jeter…with our starting lineup being mainly the regulars…just sayin…though its mostly the bench now…

…switching to random thought mode…
…I’m unofficially naming Eric Hinske bench-captain of the Yankees for 2009…thoughts?
…Does Joe Girardi do the “let a player be manager” thing on the last day of the season like Torre used to do?…and if so, whos gonna manage this year?
…Will Nick Swisher be available to pitch out of the bullpen in the playoffs?…Will he even qualify?

…and the Yankees finally lose a game…the whole winning with your bench thing was overrated anyway…
