Predict THIS

Whos goin to the playoffs? Lets find out…

AL east
Winner: New York Yankees
(if you expected any other team here, get off my blog)
Almost doesnt count: Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Praying to God for division realignment: Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays

Lets see here…defending WORLD CHAMPIONS, They found a way to add pitching rotation depth to a trio that won that WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, and their bats are as potent as they were last year.
Boston has added defense, sure, but the glory days of Beltre and Cameron are LONG behind them (“Offensively useless, they are.” -Yoda) and Ortiz is on the decline, if you dont believe me, then youre in denile.
True, Tampa Bay caught everyone with their pants down in 2008. But now that we’re aware of it, it wont happen again. Yeah, sure, Longoria can go to to toe with ARod. But theres no one else in their lineup that can match NY. Maybe Boston. But TB lacks the resources that NY and Boston have to make any deadline deal they need…

AL central
Winner: Chicago White Sox
Another one game playoff? God no!: Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers
Not happening: Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Royals

Jake Peavy + Mr Perfect + my favorite Manager / the weakest division in baseball* = No problem.
Twinkies were a long shot before losing Nathan, while the Tigers need to prove that they can play in September before I give them a vote of confidence for October…
Kansas City will probably be the basement team in the AL, leaving Greinke to count the days until his free agency…

AL west
Winner: Seattle Mariners
We cant win this tiny @S$ division?: Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics
Who the hell are we again?: California Anaheim Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

Mariners made all the right moves this winter, and even if that aging *** is on the downhill run, hes still pretty good.
Oakland wont win, I dunno why some people think they will…
Angels are ready to do a 180. I cant wait to see how bad.

NL east
Winner: Philadelphia Phillies
Its like the Yankees moved to Philly: Atlanta Braves, Florida Marlins
We dont know how, but we’ll find a way to screw up: New York Mets, Washington Natitnals Nationals
Ive been watching a lot of “Its always sunny in Philadelphia” so not only do I now know how to spell Philadelphia without worry, but now I wanna go there just to find a Paddys Pub.
Theres no other team in this division that can touch them, btw…

NLcentral
Winner: St Louis Cardinals
Close but no cigar: Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs
They resigned Holliday? F**K!: Houston astros, Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers

Right…2 Cy Young caliber starters, Pujols, resigning Holliday? Its over.
Cincinnati has made strides to contend in the future, but no this year.
The cubbies are going in the wrong direction, slowly, but will still be better than most teams in this division.

NL west
Winner: San Francisco Giants
Seriously?: Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies
Yeah, seriously: San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks

Theyve got the pitching, and now the Giants have a better offense. Why not?
Colorado and LA will have their early and late season chokes that will cost them this year.

AL wild card
Winner: Boston Red Sox
Juuuuust a bit outside: Tampa Bay Rays, Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers

The Yankee wannabes will have no problem winning yet another 2nd place award.
If the Tigers find a way to beat Chicago though, the Sox and Sox might battle for the wild card, and if thats the case, this might be a white wash.

NL wild card
Winner: Los Angeles Dodgers
Lucy, youve got some splainin to do!: Atlanta Braves

This will be a battle. They both have pitching, but LA has some constistency there and on offense.
“Hell-A, L-A, Hell-Hell-A, L-A” (guess the lyric, win a cookie)

…Hey, 100 posts, go me!

*: I really dont care if my comment offended you if youre a AL central fan. The AL central sucks and until they actually beat some non division opponents, Ill stand by that statement.

…and the 2009 turtle-wax goes to…

…This aint the car polish awards, but if they wanna sponser me, I’ll have no problem selling out…

These are the awards you DONT want to win…

The way the playoff format is set up in baseball, at least 1 team from each division gets to move on the the playoffs, plus one other team. Sometimes though, doing so leaves out a deserving team in favor of a team that won a crappy division. Example: the 2008 Yankees had the 4th best AL record, but went home for October. So, there should be awards for these little quirks in the playoff format, so the team that got the short end of the stick can feel good about itself…

The “You dont belong here” award
(Awarded to 1 of the 8 playoff teams that shouldn’t be in the playoffs)
The winner of the Twins/Tigers play-in game.
The Minnesota Twins

The “Sucks to be you” award
(Awarded to the team going home with a better record than playoff teams)
The Texas Rangers

Tim Cowlishaw said it best when he displayed no sympathy for the Twins/Tigers where the winner has to play the rested Yankees the very next night. The winning team will have 87 regular season victories. The Texas Rangers played their butts off this year, falling just short of Boston for the wild card. They have 87 wins after 162 games. Both the Twins and Tigers have 86 wins after 162 games. Math says the Rangers should be playing the Yankees…but the division layout states the Rangers dont play in the central (they’re actually closer to most, if not all, AL central teams than any of their AL west counterparts) But division layouts always confused me (I always thought that the Braves and Pirates should switch divisions)
All digressions aside, the Rangers finished 1 game better than both the Tigers and the Twins

The “Orioles and Blue Jays would rather play in this division” award
(Awarded to the crappiest division in baseball)
The American League Central Division: Tigers, Twins, White Sox, Indians, Royals

Since the AL east will always produce at least 2 powerhouse teams every year, I’d rather highlight a division at the other end of the spectrum. At first it seemed like that AL central was the obvious choice, but it just barely beat out the NL central. Take the Cardinals out of that division and it becomes a steaming pile of sh!t. There was also the NL west to consiter (I’ll never forget the 2005 San Diego Padres, winning the NL west with their 82-80 record.) but they churned out a couple winners, and the Giants put up a fight too…
The NL central did give us the Pirates and their sub .400 winning percentage and had only 2 teams above .500…but the AL central also had just 2 teams above .500 and featured 2 other teams with .401 winning percentages. The NL central may have had the quantity crap this year, but the AL central had the quality crap to win (or lose…depends on how you look at it)

The “steroid accusation rookie of the year” award
(Awarded to the slugger who is probably gonna get accused of steroids next, if not already)
(I am NOT accusing the winner of steroids. I’m just saying he’s probably gonna get scrutinized next)
Aaron Hill of the Toronto Blue Jays
2009 HR total: 36

Jason Bay couldve won this. But I wrote his career year off as “Hes just happy to get out of Pittsburgh” so hes clean (for now)…Raul Ibanez deserves a nomination, but I’m here to highlight whos next, not whose already.
The most long balls Hill had launched in a year before 2009 was 17. What the hell? 2nd basemen aren’t known for the long ball…which is why Yankees fans were excited as hell when Alfonso Soriano came on the scene…it just turned out he couldn’t play 2nd very well, but that was besides the point.

The “What the hell happened to you?” award
(Awarded to the team that fell off the map when they were suppose to be contenders)
The New York Mets

Bad enough that they have to deal with being the 2nd New York team, usually be the 2nd NL east team…but theyve also had to deal with back-to-back chokes before doing their routine September choke in June this year and letting Philly have a less dramatic division title. Injuries crippled the Mets and they never had a chance, since the injury replacments got injured too.
Thats the equivilent of breaking both legs, then having the wheels fall off your wheelchair.

The “Shut your God damn mouth!” award
(Awarded to the team that apparently talked too much during spring training)
The Chicago Cubs

The Cubbies win this one for 2 reasons. 1) For talking about being world series favorites while still unloading their spring training gear…and 2) An entire seasons worth (well, almost an entire seasons worth) of Milton Bradley.
For a team that spoke of high hopes for ending that 100+ year “curse”, they ended up stumbling-then-falling out of the gate, letting Bradley be the most talked about player, but certainly not for his playing ability (a miserable .257 hitter with 12 homers and 40 ribbies)

The “This years miracle, next years Rays” award
(Awarded to the team that made a suprise playoff run this year, and will fall well short next year)
The Colorado Rockies

Theres always a team like this. They come out of nowhere only to shock us all and make some noise down the stretch…kind like what the Rays did last year, and the ’07 Rockies, and the ’06 Tigers, and the ’03 Marlins, and the ’02 Angels…you get my drift? Then the very next year, with everyone watching, lightning doesnt strike twice and they fail. They wont be terrible, but they wont be good enough. The Dodgers are long term contenders in the west and next year will have Tommy Hanson all year for the Braves, Tim Licecum and his Giants, and the Cubs and Mets can’t both suck forever.

The “This years Nationals, next years miracle” award
(Awarded to the team that sucked this year, but can make a run next year)
The Chicago White Sox

I wanted to say the Reds, but I think they’re still another year from serious contention. The White Sox now have Jake Peavy. If he stays healthy next year, the White Sox will definalty win that weak AL central. Thats all they really needed.

The “AAA team is diguise” award
(Awarded to the team that might have better luck in AAA)
The Washington Nationals

Theyyyyyyy SUCKED…and yet, their AAA team, the Syracuse Chiefs, made the AAA playoffs. Did the two switch before the season? I wouldnt be suprised if they did.

The “Dull knife in the drawer” award
(Awarded to the player(s) with the biggest mental error this year)
The Washinton Natinals

No, that wasn’t a typo. Most teams go with an alternate uniform…The Nationals went with an alternate spelling of their name, redefining the term “Uniform fail” in the process.

Natinals.jpg…Jorge Posada deserves an honerable mention for this award for not being able to count to srtike three, but Washington wins over him since I can’t imagine not realizing the typo on the uniform…either that or none of the Nationals can read…

So thats the 2009 Turtle Wax Awards. Maybe next year I can make trophies to hand out to the winners losers to have.

How important should tonight be?

Yankees and Rays…this matchup mightve been exciting last year…meaningless now. What is meaningful is Sabathia has 19 wins this year, and tonight is his last start before the playoffs. The question though is how hard should CC be trying for 20? Should he go all out? Should he hold out and save some for the playoffs? If its tied after 7, should he go back out there? Questions questions questions! The answers will be revealed tonight. Most of our regulars are going out there against David Price, who hasnt been exactly as dominant as marketed (he pitches well at home, but CC pitches well everywhere).

Meanwhile, in the world of meaning games, there will be White Sox/Tigers, Royals/Twins, and tonights headliner: Rockies/Dodgers.

…oh, and the city of Chicago came in dead last in todays olympic vote…I know its a moot point, but Chicago should be used to losing…and like their Cubs, never stood a chance…

End of 1 in Tampa Bay
Not the most awe inspiring inning of CCs year. Another triple hit to Swisher-land killed us. Anyone else worried about how Swishers defense is becomming more and more of a liability?
Rare, RARE error by Tex didnt help either…

Middle of 5 in Detroit
Tigers would rather clinch now instead of needing their aces to pitch like hell now, before they (might) meet the Yankees…kinda like how theyd rather not need Edwin Jackson to pitch a meaningful game right now…and I doubt they like the idea of being down 3-0 with an ace on the mound…go figure. Twins need to capitalize…

Bottom 1 in Minnesota
…and are they! Delmon Young just went yard, not exactly a common thing either, to put the Twinkies up 5-0…there still 24 outs before its all over and anything can still happen, but the Twins are facing a Royals pitcher not named Grienke, with a 5 run 1st inning lead, so things are looking good thus far…

Top 6 in Detroit
…And the ChiSox just doubled their lead. 6-0 now! Twins up big, Tigers down big, just when the AL central looked finished, it just might have some life left!
What happened to the Tigers? Simple, they ran into a healthy Jake Peavy! I’m telling ya, next year Chicago is gonna make a run with Peavy leading the charge!

Bottom 3 in Tampa Bay
Well havent I been following a trio of blowouts this evening…
CC looks more like Joba (no offense) out there. Forget 20 wins, he’ll be lucky to stay in the top 5 in era after this…
Tampa Bay just wishes it couldve played like this all year…
Tigers still trail big and late while Twins still lead big and early…

Bottom 4 in Tampa Bay
All I can say at this point is: Lets get the sucking out of our systems now, before the games start mattering again…

Game over in Detroit
Tigers lose, Twin are killing. Chances are good Verlander might have to pitch on Sunday, which would put the Yankees in a major advantage should the Tigers win the division.
…Peavy was dirty. 8 innings, 2 hit shutout baseball. We all know about AL pitchers going to the NL and becomming God-like…Peavy came from the NL and never lost here in the AL. Pretty interesting.

Bottom 5 in Tampa Bay
CC wasnt so hot. I wouldnt worry bout his game 1 start.

B.J. Uptons going for the cycle. Hes got the hard hits, all he needs is a single…There has never been a cycle hit in (Devil) Rays history…
…and Upton did it. Good for him. Not bad, 4-4 and its only the 5th.
1st Ray to ever do it. Congrats to him.

…Be nice if we can keep the Rays from scoring…if only for just 1 inning…

End of 6 in Tampa Bay
…Did we start a new game? Cuz theres someone new at every position. Whatever we did, it worked, the Death Rays were held scoreless for the 1st time tonight. Bruney looked good, too.

Middle of 8 in Tampa Bay
Well, throughout the thrashing, there is somewhat of a bright spot. 1st is Bruney/Coke pitching effective, no doubt Hughes will follow…and Juan Miranda goes deep for his 1st big league homer. Congrats!

Top 9 in Tampa Bay
Games been more or less over for a while, but at least now its finally just over…
…its become a game in Minnesota. Royals trail by just 3 in the 8th…
…and the Rockies take an early lead in their showdown with the Dodgers…

Yankees, Red Sox, the final battle part 1

Epic, no?

Tonight we can turn our magic number from a 5 into a 3 and we’re looking for Joba to help out. Word is that theres no more restraints on Joba and his pitch count or inning total, so he can let loose on Boston…which hes done a good job so far, knocking the Red Sox down 1-2-3 in the 1st 2 innings. Yankees, meanwhile were quick to strike with a run in the 1st. 1-0 Yankees in the bottom of the 2nd…

End of 2 in New York
So, it remains 1-0 but if Joba can deal, then 1 run could be all we need.

…Another magic number of notice is St. Louis. They need 1 more win or Cub loss to claim the NLcentral and officially enter the playoffs.
Both LA teams need a combo of 4 wins or Rangers/Rockies losses to claim their west divisions.
The number also stands at 4 for the Phillies in the NLeast
The Red Sox playoff birth magic number stands at 3…again, over the Rangers

Bottom 3 in New York
…And thats all she wrote for Jon Lester, not because the Yankees lead 4-0 in the 3rd, but cuz Melky hit a line drive off Lester’s knee. Sucks for Boston, which gives me mixed feelings. Ironic that the only Boston starter I couldnt think of anything bad to say about gets hurt. I dont know how ESPN is gonna make the Red Sox look like the best playoff team now.

End of 3 in New York
5-0 Yankees. This isnt LA and these arent the Angels, so I dont expect the Yankees to blow any leads. We’re facing a soft throwing reliever with a big lead-we wont lose. The best part is that we’re eating into the Red Sox bullpen now, weakening them for the next 2 games. Sweeping Boston is a possibility now, especially with CC and Pettitte going.

Middle 4 in New York
Jobas been solid so far. I’m willing to ignore the homer allowed if he continues to pitch this good. Damn, just as we write him off as a postseason starter, he does good. Go figure.
ARods been great lately as well. Definatly ready for October…for the 1st time in his life…

Bottom 4 in New York
Lester isn’t crippled. He’ll be “fine”. He still remains a question mark for Boston, which knocks them from their “elite rotation for the playoffs” position. If I were a Red Sox fan, I start getting worried about the Angels series…

End of 4 in New York
Are we having fun yet?
I noticed Ive got an update for almost every half inning, then I realize why, THIS GAME IS 2 HOURS OLD AND WERE NOT EVEN HALF DONE!
Its gonna be a long night….but a good long night, one that features a 6-1 Yankee lead.

Meanwhile…The Cardinals trail 1-0 in Colorado in the 4th. $10 says theyll finish before the Yankees do…

Middle 6 in New York
Joba did great. Couple mistakes that were taken deep, but other than that, great. Our bullpen is getting a 3 run lead with 6 outs before Mo. No problem.

…Twins lead and Tigers trail right now…the AL central keeps getting interesting…

End of 7 in New York
The Yankees are 7-7 in stealing against old man Varitek!
ARod is 3-3, a triple away from the cycle.
Yankees lead 9-3…This game is over.

Middle 8 in Cololado
The Cardinals managed to tie this one up. Cubs and Giants just got underway but Im sure St. Louis would rather win and get in. Carpenter pitched a great game for them, too.
Lincecum is on the mound for the game against the Cubs, so you figure St. Louis will clinch tonight nomatter what.

Game Over in Chicago
White Sox hold off Detroit 2-0. 7 shutout innings from Jake Peavy, Chicago might be a problem next year in the AL…not this year of coarse. Twins lead by 4 after 7, so the Tigers cant afford to give up any more ground before the big meeting they have with the Twins…

End of 8 in New York
Next innings more of a formality than anything else. Any Boston hope to steal the division from us at the last minute should finally die after tonight. CC and Andy starting the next 2 games? We should have the east and home field advantage all wrapped up after this series.

Meanwhile, Colorado got a sac fly walkoff against St. Louis, so all eyes are on the Cubs/Giants game for them.

Top 9 in New York
Phil Coke in to wrap up whats left of Boston…
Yankees win!

Nice confidence booster for Joba, he we all really needed it.
It seems every last question mark for the Yankees have been working themselves out. Next up, Pettitte could dominate on Sunday and finally silence all those idiots who think hes still hurt…
